Make the decision behind the ball
Before you step in, choose a target and a club. Think about the shot you can play today, not the perfect shot you wish you had. Pick a generous landing area and account for the trouble you most want to avoid.
Separate thinking from doing
Use one rehearsal to feel the movement you want. Then step up, aim the clubface and settle your feet. Try looking once at the target and returning your eyes to the ball. Let the routine lead into the swing instead of adding another technical thought.
Practise it without a scorecard
On the range, change target and club every few balls. Start each shot behind the ball and use the same sequence. Give yourself a point for committing to your decision, regardless of where the ball finishes.
Keep it personal
Your routine does not need to look like a tour player’s. Keep it short enough to maintain pace of play and simple enough to repeat. If you feel stuck, step away, breathe and start again.
